Without Verification, Lies Win

Ahead of GlobalFact 12, the global fact-checking summit in Rio de Janeiro,
the Latin American network LatamChequea warns about the “perfect storm”
threatening evidence-based journalism in the region.

About LatamChequea

The fact-checking network of Latin America

LatamChequea is a network of fact-checkers from across Latin America, the United States, Spain, and Portugal. It began in 2014 as an in-person meeting and today brings together 48 media outlets from 21 countries. Created and led by Chequeado, the network aims to share experiences and tools to help improve the quality of public debate and foster collaboration among diverse media organizations in the region, in order to increase the impact of fact-checking and the fight against disinformation in our continent.

In response to the 2020 “infodemic,” fact-checkers from across Latin America joined forces to counter disinformation. We created a shared database of fact-checks on coronavirus, ran awareness campaigns, produced content in multiple formats — and much more!

Disinformation about COVID-19 vaccines can undermine public trust. That’s why in 2021 we came together to deliver verified information to three specific audiences: young people (through influencers), older adults, and Indigenous communities.

The Disinformers is a series of investigations carried out by LatamChequea allies about actors who have systematically spread disinformation during the pandemic. The goal is to reveal the narratives and patterns behind specific misinformation.
