Fifth Edition

São Paulo, Brazil

On November 28 and 29, 2024, in São Paulo, Brazil, LatamChequea brought together more than 100 experts from over 55 organizations across 22 countries to promote collaborative work and generate shared knowledge in the fight against disinformation in the region. The event, organized by Chequeado along with Aos Fatos, Comprova, Estadão Verifica, and Lupa, marked the network’s tenth anniversary and included workshops, conferences, and panels focused on international collaboration, artificial intelligence, media literacy, regulation, and sustainability.

2022

Fourth Edition

Bogotá, Colombia

On October 6 and 7, 2022, fact-checkers from across Latin America gathered again for the fourth in-person LatamChequea meeting, held in Bogotá, Colombia. The event, organized by Chequeado, ColombiaCheck, and La Silla Vacía, hosted more than 100 participants from over 50 organizations in 15 countries. As the first in-person gathering after the pandemic, the agenda included health-related misinformation and the collaborations that emerged to counter falsehoods about the virus and vaccines. The event also covered electoral misinformation, educational projects, how to respond when misinformation comes from the government, tools for identifying false information, and new formats for spreading fact-checks. Mental health and journalist safety were also discussed, along with funding opportunities and ways to strengthen LatamChequea’s regional work.

2018

Third Edition

Ciudad de Buenos Aires, Argentina

On October 11 and 12, the third LatamChequea event was held in Buenos Aires, Argentina, at the Torcuato Di Tella University. It brought together more than 60 guests from 18 countries across the region and the world. This edition focused on the disinformation phenomenon, the innovation of new formats to reach wider audiences, various educational projects led by regional fact-checkers, automation in fact-checking, alliances with social media platforms, and collaborations among different media outlets.

2016

Second Edition

Buenos Aires, Argentina

On June 7 and 8, 2016, the second LatamChequea event was held at Torcuato Di Tella University in Buenos Aires, Argentina. This second regional gathering on innovation, journalism, and fact-checking brought together more than 40 participants from over 15 Latin American and other international countries. It also served as a prelude to the Global Fact event, which was held in Buenos Aires on June 9 and 10 of that same year. The agenda included discussions on fact-checking methodologies, how to conduct live fact-checks, the importance of measuring impact, building audience relationships, and tips for securing funding.

2014

First Edition

Buenos Aires, Argentina

On Saturday, November 8, 2014, Chequeado organized LatamChequea, the first regional meeting on innovation and fact-checking journalism, in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The gathering brought together fact-checkers from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, the United States, Mexico, and Peru. A collaborative fact-checking session was also held, where participants and the Chequeado community verified statements suggested by followers. At the same time, the first “Chequeatoncito” took place, where high school students fact-checked statements of their choosing.
