Previous Editions

LatamChequea events began in 2014 in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and marked the launch of the LatamChequea network. Initially, the events aimed to promote fact-checking in the region, while recent gatherings have focused on fostering collaboration among the dozens of member organizations of the Latin American network, as well as building connections with other stakeholders in the host country, such as academics, journalists, media outlets, and non-governmental organizations, among others. Starting in 2022, the events have rotated among different countries in the region. The next event will take place in 2026.

Sixth edition


Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

On June 24 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, LatamChequea gathered 115 specialists from more than 50 organizations across 20 countries on the eve of GlobalFact to continue strengthening the regional fact-checkers alliance. The event, organized by Chequeado together with Aos Fatos, Comprova, Estadão Verifica, Lupa and Uol Confere, took advantage of the international fact-checkers meeting organized by IFCN being held in the region, and we hosted a side event the day before featuring workshops, talks and panel discussions.

Fifth edition


São Paulo, Brazil

On November 28 and 29, 2024, in São Paulo, Brazil, LatamChequea brought together more than 100 specialists from over 55 organizations across 22 countries to promote collaborative work and build shared knowledge in the fight against disinformation in the region. The event, organized by Chequeado together with Aos Fatos, Comprova, Estadão Verifica and Lupa, marked the network’s tenth anniversary and included workshops, conferences and panel discussions focused on international collaboration, artificial intelligence, media literacy, regulation and sustainability.


Fourth edition


Bogotá, Colombia

On October 6 and 7, 2022, fact-checkers from Latin America gathered once again for the fourth in-person LatamChequea meeting, held in Bogotá, Colombia. The event, organized by Chequeado, ColombiaCheck and La Silla Vacía, welcomed more than 100 attendees from over 50 organizations across 15 countries. As the first in-person event after the pandemic, the agenda addressed both health-related disinformation and the collaborations that emerged to counter falsehoods about the virus and vaccines. Electoral disinformation, educational projects, how to respond when disinformation comes from government sources, tools for identifying false information, and new formats for sharing fact-checks were also discussed. The mental health and safety of journalists were addressed as well, alongside opportunities for funding and ways to deepen LatamChequea’s regional work.


Third edition


Buenos Aires, Argentina

On October 11 and 12, the third LatamChequea event took place in Buenos Aires, Argentina, hosted at Torcuato Di Tella University. It brought together more than 60 guests from 18 countries in the region and around the world. The agenda focused on the disinformation phenomenon, the development of new formats to reach wider audiences, educational projects carried out by fact-checkers across the region, automation in fact-checking, partnerships with social networks, and collaborations between different media outlets.


Second edition


Buenos Aires, Argentina

On June 7 and 8, 2016, the second LatamChequea was held at Torcuato Di Tella University in Buenos Aires, Argentina. This second regional gathering on innovation, journalism and data fact-checking brought together more than 40 people from over 15 countries in Latin America and other regions of the world. It also served as a prelude to the global fact-checkers event, Global Fact, which that year took place in Buenos Aires on June 9 and 10. The event covered topics related to fact-checking methods, how to conduct a live fact-check, the importance of impact measurement, how to engage with audiences, and recommendations for securing funding.


First edition


Buenos Aires, Argentina

On Saturday, November 8, 2014, Chequeado organized LatamChequea, the first regional gathering on innovation and data fact-checking journalism, in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The event brought together fact-checkers from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, the United States, Mexico and Peru. A collective fact-check was also carried out, verifying phrases suggested by the Chequeado follower community and LatamChequea participants. Simultaneously, the first Chequeatoncito took place, in which high school students verified phrases of their own choosing.
