LatamChequea Education is the working group on educational topics of LatamChequea, the Latin American fact-checking network. It seeks to strengthen the educational areas of fact-checkers in the region and expand Media and Information Literacy (MIL) in Latin America, in partnership with fact-checking organizations and other key stakeholders. It promotes MIL as a strategy to contribute to a better-informed, more critical citizenry regarding the production, consumption, and circulation of media content, especially in relation to disinformation and information integrity.
Who are we?
The Education chapter of LatamChequea is a collaborative space that promotes the exchange of knowledge and experiences, as well as capacity-building in Media and Information Literacy (MIL) among network organizations and in coordination with other stakeholders.
The objectives of this space are:
- To consolidate a community in which LatamChequea member organizations participate, facilitating the exchange of experiences, resources, and strategies to integrate MIL into their training, journalism, and anti-disinformation initiatives.
- To foster collaboration with organizations specialized in MIL, education, and communication, expanding the production of resources and tools that strengthen fact-checkers in their educational role and promote the incorporation of media literacy into journalistic practice.
What do we do?
- We work collaboratively to promote and strengthen MIL policies and practices in the region.
- We build an active community for the exchange of experiences, knowledge, strategies, and MIL best practices.
- We provide training and produce educational materials.
Media and Information Literacy (MIL)
Promoting MIL is a key strategy in addressing current challenges related to the right to communication in democratic societies. It enables the development of the skills needed to navigate a complex digital environment, critically read information and media content, understand how it is produced and circulated, and participate in an informed and ethical way in the media and digital platforms ecosystem. In doing so, it strengthens not only the individual capacity for responsible decision-making, but also democratic life as a whole, fostering more active, critical, and information-integrity-conscious citizens.
